Most calorie calculators estimate your needs using population-based equations. This calculator uses the Mifflin-St Jeor equation to estimate your basal metabolic rate and daily calorie needs. Your actual resting metabolic rate may be higher or lower, which is why measured RMR testing can be so helpful.

Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR) represents the number of calories your body requires each day to support essential functions such as breathing, circulation, temperature regulation, and cellular repair.
The calculator above uses the Mifflin-St Jeor equation, one of the most commonly used formulas for estimating calorie needs.
While this equation provides a useful starting point, it remains an estimate based on population averages. Individual metabolism can vary significantly due to factors such as body composition, genetics, age, training status, hormone levels, and overall health.
For this reason, actual calorie needs may be higher or lower than the estimate generated by this calculator.
Most calorie calculators estimate metabolism using age, sex, height, and weight.
Resting Metabolic Rate (RMR) testing measures how many calories your body actually burns at rest by analyzing oxygen consumption and carbon dioxide production.
In some individuals, measured resting metabolic rate closely matches calculator estimates. In others, the difference can be several hundred calories per day.
Knowing your actual metabolic rate can be especially helpful if you:
Rather than relying solely on equations, RMR testing provides an objective measurement of your resting calorie needs.
Just look at my own example above. The image on the left is my calculated RMR of 1,358 kcal, while the image on the right is my measured RMR of 1,929 kcal.
Two individuals of the same age, sex, height, and weight may receive the same calorie estimate from an online calculator.
However, differences in muscle mass, body composition, fitness level, and metabolic efficiency can cause their actual resting metabolic rates to differ significantly.
This is one reason why some people feel successful using standard calorie recommendations while others struggle despite following similar advice.
Online calculators use equations based on population averages. Your actual metabolism may be higher or lower. Schedule a Resting Metabolic Rate test to measure your personal calorie needs.
